The reason is I don’t have a bedtime. Between 12 and 2 is the norm, but any time 6 hours either side isn’t unusual.
Here’s a video by Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project, with a challenge to take bedtimes seriously.
She expands on the video at Psych Central, with 7 tips for getting to bed “on time”.
- Give yourself a specific bedtime (really, it’s the key)
- Don’t wait until you’re sleepy
- Stay away from the internet for at least an hour beforehand
- No caffeine for several hours beforehand (that’s 8 hrs for me)
- Remind yourself how great it feels to wake up naturally
- Get ready for bed well ahead of time
- Create a bedtime ritual that you do every night.
To read the reasoning for each visit the Psych Central post.
Why am I writing about this? Because getting enough sleep is just about the best thing you can do for your mental health.
I’m using reminders on my phone to tell me to go to bed – at the same time each night. 3 nights so far and it’s working.

I have essentially the entire smorgasbord of mood disorders as well as sleep apnea–severe sleep apnea–and I am beginning to think that I may have to force myself to use the sleep apnea mask. It’s uncomfortable, it dries out my throat and eyes, and it blisters my face, but, as you write, “getting enough sleep is just about the best thing you can do for your mental health.” And overall health, too.
I do have to admit that I love staying up late. It’s so quiet! I can get things done! But when I wake up, I’m only about one-fifth human, and I’m cranky, and I don’t spend adequate time with my kids, and so forth. I’m gonna set up my sleep apnea machine right now.\
Nice website!

Yes – I’ve tried to set a sleeping time at 10:30pm every day since my depression. But I still can’t fall asleep immediately. But i try.

I am saddened for all on this website that are suffering from depression, seeing councellors who don’t seem to be helping and who are on anti-depressants? Going through depression is like being in prison within your own mind and body. I was there years ago while raising a large family. I wanted so much to be super Mom and super wife but I was failing at it badly and that brought on more depression. That’s is only one example. One day I got down on my knees and cried out to God to help me. Counselling wasn’t helping and the anti-depresents were making me feel worse psycologically. When I got up off my knees I was not the same person when i got up of my knees as when i went down on them. Scripture tells us, God is the Counsellor the Mighty Father the Prince of Peace. He loves us and cares about us. I didn’t know this God I cried out to this day but man wasn’t helping me. They were draining my pocket book andmessing up my mind. God the Father heard my cry and brought me out of the depression and off the pills and He didn’t charge me a cent because His Son Jesus Christ had already paid the penalty for my sins on Calvary’s Cross when He shed His blood for me. If you wast to keep feeling the way you do then just disregard this post but if you want to be free from depression call out to God for help and He will answer your cry. Scripture says, a broken spirit and a contrite heart Oh God you will not ignore. God is very real and He loves you. He is the one True God and He is alive. There is only one name to call upon for help and that name is Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God. Once you call upon His Name from a contrite heart you will never be the same. My prayer for you is, Lord move n the heart and life of everyone who reads this post. Reveal yourself to those who are struggling with depression and deliver them from this hellish condition. In Jesus Name I ask this.

I’m also a believer and I have bipolar, but as much as I wish it true I can’t say that I’ve been healed. I don’t think this reflects a lack of faith or prayer or anything else on my part.
Romans 5.3-5 says: “We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”
In my experience there is no difference between Christians in this respect – mental illness doesn’t discriminate. Churches are filled with people who are struggling.

I don’t know how I wound up on this site, but I’m glad I did. I am just learning about Jesus and it seems that as if everywhere I turn, he’s there with another message. I also suffer from depression, and know the hell people go through if they have a mental illness not only for the illness itself, but for the stigma that goes along with it. As for sleeping, I am glad I read the blog as it reaffirmed something I know already and though I have no problem sleeping when I’m calm, I am also a worrier with anxiety so sleep can become a problem. Praying is good. It’s the only thing that has been able to help me lately.

Depression is a reality for many, many, humans. For the religious who think that they have cured themselves…remember, and never ever forget “Jesus wept”.

Hi Kilian
Just to let you know you are not alone I too have the same as you, I have recently got my sleep apnea machine and of course it is a case of trial and errror, but my advice to you make sure you get the correct size of mask I know it is frustrating at first I have bought 3 masks – yes i know they are very expensive but is certainly think it was well worth the money – the first one nasal pillows was shocking with such a sore nose it was unbearable, now i have another one that is much better nasal mask resmed fx, my husband has also recently got it too, he also bought yet another one to try which came in 3 sizes so we can both try it out, I fully understand for anyone that the cost is very important but the benefit of using it really does make a big difference, and a much better nights sleep waking up feeling refreshed. Hope this is of some help to you take care and persevere sorry but it is trail and error. p.s. If you would like the name of a good site to get your mask from I can recommend one.
