Two of my most popular posts have been 12 Ways to Care for a Depressed Person and Things to Say to Someone with Depression. Why have they been popular? Judging from comments I’ve received, they struck a chord for the practical help in dealing with a depressed person. A view from the other side, so to speak.
I’ve just read a very helpful article at Psych Central that is in the same vein. Helping Someone with a Mental Health Concern is written by psychiatrist John M. Grohol. Of particular interest to me are his insights on effective listening and empathizing with a mentally ill person. It is invaluable advice for someone in a caring role.

One of the first things you should leave at the door is judgment. I think this not only applies to caring for someone who is mentally ill but for someone who needs to have a friend. The article is right to point out that we sometimes have the habit of arguing or disagreeing with people. We forget that we are there to listen.

We are having a National Caregivers Conference on October 26, 2010 in Iselin, New Jersey (North Jersey). Our keynote speaker is John Crowley, the man who inspired the movie “Extraordinary Measures.” He is also the President and CEO of Americus Therapeutics.
I’ve been reaching out to caregiver, family support and disability blogs. I was wondering if you would post our information about our conference on your blog as well as the website for more information for those who may be interested. This would be a big help and reach out to those caregivers and families that are not alone.
Our conference website is http://www.nationalcaregiversconference.org and our organizations website is http://www.familyresourcenetwork.org
