Hello,

This is great information. I really didn't know that oils from plants is converted to DHA and EPA at only 10 -15%. So your saying that it's better to take fish oil rather than plant and nut omega 3?

But what about all the talk of mercury and other pollutants in the fish oil, even the supplements?

I take supplements and I haven't seen any side effects yet, so I guess you just have to take them as recommended by the FDA, with a proper diet, and workout schedule.

Thank you,

Friend,

Your information about Omega3 acids is very timely for me: I have asked my local community mental health center (Louisville, USA) to consider a clinical trial in the treatment of my bipolar condition-- random months WITH Omega3s and randomly WITHOUT--for a total of six months, experimentally with Depakote performance (my present regime) as a control. I want to get at this article in the BMJ. All I do know is that there was a double-blind + placebo test with O3s and the fatty acids were said to be comparable to LiCO3/valproics. (Report: see "Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Bipolar Disorder: A Preliminary Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial," by A.L. Stoll and all, Archives of General Psychiatry 56:407-412, May, 1999.) It is NOT to be expected in medicine that all parties will agree-- at least initially-- on a matter. But I did a survey of Medline abstracts regarding Omega3s and bipolar treatment-- to find of 10 articles on humans having an abstract-- all were in accord that O3s have SOME benefit here, and a NUMBER of abstracts suggested that GREAT BENEFIT is obtained by this form of treatment.

I do want to read the BMJ material, and send it to my clinicians if possible...certainly before any contemplated clinical trial starts.

SO THANKS !!!
