Why? What’s the problem?
A good dose of caffeine stimulates your adrenal glands to pump out adrenaline. Adrenaline is a stress hormone that primes us for “fight or flight” from an external threat. Even if you’re sitting at a desk working.
When you drink coffee throughout the day the adrenal glands, and the stress response, are continually triggered.
So What?
I’ve enjoyed 4 espressos today, and coffee is a big part of my life, so this news is hard. After all, a good cup of coffee feels like instant therapy. Unfortunately for people like me with a mood disorder drinking too much coffee can be a real problem.
After drinking coffee the caffeine initially clears your head and makes you alert. As the adrenalin hormone kicks in your muscles tense, your breathing and heart rates increase, and your blood sugar level elevates. Insulin is released, pushing your blood sugar right down. A normal response is to grab another coffee or something sweet to compensate. This can give you a sugar roller-coaster over the day, which obviously affects your mood.
This is the basic, very simplified cycle. If it continues over the long term then the adrenal gland can get exhausted, and health problems can arise. These include chronic fatigue, irritability and headaches, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. Sleep problems are often due to drinking coffee late in the day, and lack of sleep is one of the very common triggers for a depressive, or even manic, episode. Lots of coffee can quickly cause lots of problems.
There is sort of a consensus in the depression literature that 2 cups of coffee in the morning should be OK for someone with depression. Obviously it varies between individuals. Definitely nothing after 4pm!
So what do you do?
If you’re like me, it’s tough. I’m not going near coffee substitutes.
- There is some nice coffee around that has been decaffeinated using the Swiss water method. If you source it fresh and grind it yourself you may be surprised. Beware of the chemical based method of decaffeinating (most common method). It’s done with something akin to dry cleaning fluid!
- Try to source coffee that is naturally low in caffeine, not decaffeinated. We have growers in Australia that produce low caffeine coffee, and I believe there is a small industry of growers in South America.
- Only drink 2 cups before noon!

As a herbal product, garlic is the 4th best selling supplement in the U.S. A stunning amount of garlic is being consumed for its health benefits.
Lacking energy? Feeling lethargic? Is it one of depression’s symptoms, or might you be dehydrated?

I am 23 years old, female, and considered myself to be in good health until I started developing boils on various parts of my body. After being examined by my doctor, and taking antibiotics which did not help to abolish the boils, and also after finding out that the boils were a symptom of the MRSA bacteria, I decided to take matters in my own hands. I conducted some online research of my own, and found that consumption of raw garlic seemed to be the most effective option to rid myself of the MRSA bacteria and boils. I began consuming 2 cloves of raw garlic daily for approximately 1 1/2 months, then began reducing the rate to 2 cloves per every 3 days. I started consuming the garlic mid-November 2008. I have not received one boil since, and it is now Feb. 2009. (Note: prior to eating the garlic, I had been getting boils for 3 months – recurrent – about one per week)……Also, not to mention the tremendous anti-bacterial effects I feel i have been recieving, my mental health, mood, stabiity, self-control, consciousness, and confidence feels like it has made a complete 360 degree turn. I never have been diagnosed for bi-polar disorder, depression, etc.; however, we all feel mentally unstable sometimes….but I truly feel since I have started consuming raw garlic, that there has been an overall positive change in my overall self and well being. I encourage everyone to suck up the pungent flavor for 20 minutes, and expose yourself to the great health benefits of this wonderful flora……ONE OTHER THING……since eating the garlic, I have not experienced one single battle with a common cold, flu, earache, sore throat, etc.

Julianne, that’s an awesome story. I started trying garlic recently too.. and i think it’s helping me a lot. it feels like my memory is improving. usually when i recall things, i only see single still pictures in my mind, now, i am starting to see movement in my memory. only thing i changed recently is the 1 clove of garlic per meal, so i am thinking it’s the garlic. also i get rushes of energy that feel reliable and stable.

I was severely depressed for a long period of time. It wasn’t the first time it happened. Probably caused by personal problems and being unable to cope with a flood of work.
I ate some raw garlic. Don’t know why. Never eaten it before. About 2 weeks later I noticed a definite change in my mood – not a brilliant improvement but certainly I noticed a beneficial change which I attributed to the garlic.
So I started eating a raw clove about twice a week. My depression disappeared; my attitude is significantly more positive, am achieving more and I amaze myself by coping well workwise even if I don’t get my 9 hours sleep.
I have recommended garlic it to my friends as a serious treatment for depression.

I started taking garlic and parsley supplements, and I noticed a reduction in anxiety, better mood and decreased irritabality, before reading about the German study. I never would have thought garlic could be so powerful.

Aaaah, it’s great isn’t it? Garlic is *really* good for your skin too as it clears up acne due to the sulphur content :)

Does anyone know if garlic has been shown scientifically to have any effect, good or bad, on mood? I’ve been eating a lot of raw and cooked garlic daily for several years. I believe that as a consequence, I almost never get ill from viruses. I don’t know if garlic has had any significant impact on my blood pressure, as I am forced to take hypertensive medicines daily. I love my garlic and miss it if I ever run out or don’t have time to prepare it for my breakfast. However, I read Culpepper’s little blurb on “garlick,” and he states that garlic increases melancholy in those who are prone to melancholy, and it also increases aggressiveness and anger, “Choler,” in those who are predisposed to that. I suffer from chronic depression due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and I wonder if there is anything to Culpepper’s observations from the 1700s. If anyone has any solid information on this, please let me know.

Sylvia: I’ve been taking Allicinmax capsules (garlic derivative) in order to try to rid myself of any infections that may be hampering me and I find it makes me feel depressed. I’ve tried it a few times so I can compare how I feel when I’m not taking it to how I feel when I am. I wonder whether it’s because the garlic is fighting something. I keep stopping taking it because I’d rather not feel depressed but then I think if it is fighting something I should really battle it head on. I’d be interested if anyone has more info too!

Garlic has been shown to have antidepressant effects. It is an MAOI and affects GABA in some way.

I have a long history of depression and insomnia. I notice that when I eat raw garlic, I sleep like a rock and experience mild euphoria. If there is no down side, and I experience benefit, I will try the garlic supplements.

I eat raw garlic a couple of times a week. I’ve noticed that it opens up my sinuses and gives me a mild feeling of relaxation/euphoria (but no tiredness). Also, if I feel a cold coming on I eat a couple of cloves and that feeling goes away. I would advise anyone curious about the health benefits of garlic to eat some. Your first time will likely be TORTURE…seriously, not only does it have a potent flavor but it has such a powerful heat…I don’t know that it’s hotter than, say, a serano pepper…but it’s a weird powerful sort of heat that is pretty overwhelming. Anyway, the more often you eat it the easier it gets and it definitely feels like it has a positive effect on me.

I am amazed at these storys !! Yes, I feel the same way!! I was watching the DR OZ show, and a woman said she Snorted garlic juice for her sinnus problems and it worked 100%. I have had terrible problems with my sinnus for years. It would leave me bed ridden for days and then turn into a secondary infection. So,..I pressed some ORGANIC garlic and snorted it….WOW thats a hoot!! I swore I’d never do it again,..but my sinnus cleared up in 2 hours and I had energy like I havent had in years. So I snorted again a few days later….I feel “GOOD” really good. I want to do things, walk, work, run jump, I just have tons of energy. I used to have to take a nap after dinner , I was always drained and had lost all my stamina and my body seemed heavy and sluggish. I LOVE this new lease on life, plus it chasses your depression away completley….YAAAAhhhhh. Iget sort of an all day high from it, and I love it and need it. I use to be an alcholic and have been bitchy ever since I stopped driking….not anymore..LOL. It does have a down side for me that I have to watch…it makes me more agressive sexually….could be a good thing at my age LOL. Cheers every one!!!

From personal experience, I can attest to the truth of this article and some readers’ testimonies. Depression is caused to an extent by the work of bad intestinal bacteria. Eating raw garlic several times daily for a few months effectively destroys the bad bacteria and promotes the good ones. One’s mood improves dramatically.
I also believe depression can be caused in varying extent by the influence of evil spirits. However if one’s GI tract is cleansed and strong through eating garlic, these evil spirits have less chance of affecting one. In fact historically garlic is said to chase away vampires. Nowadays such a tale is laughed at by so-called scientific people. But the truth may be stranger than fiction.
Anyway, conscientiously eating raw garlic daily brings sunshine into one’s life. Eat garlic also to resolve any intestinal disorders including IBS and IBD. And do supplement it with safe tonic herbs like White Oak Bark to repair and tone up your GI tract if your IBS or IBD has been a long-standing one.
